2003 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon

93 Points - Wine Advocate

Napa Valley vintner, Randy Dunn, has built a reputation over four decades for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignons. After making wines at Caymus from 1975-1985, Randy established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain where he continues to craft distinctive wines of high acclaim. Now partnering with Allen Shoup, Randy brings his artistry and expertise to Washington State to produce small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley's finest vineyards.

Feather is a richly concentrated wine with ripe black cherry and mocha aromas. Toasty on entry, the wine's dark fruit flavors include an intense blackberry mid-palate highlighted by a lush, spicy finish. An age-worthy wine, yet approachable and elegant with a unique balance of tannins, acidity and richness.

2003 FEATHER - 93 POINTS

"Feather's bold aromatics reveal loads of roasted black fruits and spices. A massive effort, it is thick, dense, and powerful. Layers of licorice and tar-laced black fruits are found in its velvety-textured core as well as in its long finish. Though unquestionably a Randy Dunn wine, one that’s loaded for bear (not quail), its finish reveals ripe, round tannin that is sweeter and more civilized than any I’ve encountered in Dunn’s California behemoths (and I own many!)."

2003 FEATHER - 92 POINTS

"Supple and velvety style stacks pepper and coffee notes on top of a vivid core of blackberry, raspberry and currant fruit that just doesn't quit. Attractive now, but should develop additional depth with time in the bottle."

2003 FEATHER - 91 POINTS

"Bright ruby-red. Dark berries, plum, graphite, licorice, mocha and earth on the nose. Plump, ripe and broad but not overly sweet, with fruit-driven flavors of plum and black raspberry. The tannins show a slight youthful dryness but nonetheless come across as broad and sweet for a Randy Dunn wine. Stylish and long."

Randy chose a diverse selection of Washington vineyards to create a multi-layered wine. This debut release is a combination of Red Mountain grapes (43%) chosen for their rich mouth-feel; Horse Heaven Hills vineyards (54%) favored for depth and elegance; and 30-year-old vines from Sagemoor Vineyard north of Pasco (3%) for structure.

Randy Dunn is one of the world’s most celebrated makers of extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons.

Dunn established his reputation at Caymus Winery from 1975 to 1985, where his Cabernet Sauvignons became the benchmark for the industry. In addition, his artistry shaped other premium wineries that now enjoy an acclaimed place in the sun (Pahlmeyer, Livingston, La Jota and others). Since 1979, Dunn has produced roughly 5,000 cases a year of his Dunn Vineyards Cabernets.

Randy is known not only for his famous wines, but for his philosophy on how to make wine. He does it his way - leaving the floor of the Napa Valley “to corn and melon farmers,” he tends his vines in the red stony soil of Howell Mountain. There are no road signs; no retail sales. And don’t look for him in a winery tour guide. No time for that, as Randy spends his quiet hours making his wonderful heirloom wines.

Randy lives with his wife, Lori, next to the winery on Howell Mountain.
