2005 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon

92 Points - Wine Advocate

Napa Valley vintner, Randy Dunn, has built a reputation over four decades for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignons. After making wines at Caymus from 1975-1985, Randy established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain where he continues to craft distinctive wines of high acclaim. Now partnering with Allen Shoup, Randy brings his artistry and expertise to Washington State to produce small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley's finest vineyards.

Ripe and beautifully balanced, the 2005 Feather is a wine with great concentration and depth. Bursting with mocha-scented blackberry and plum flavors that offer a rich mouth-feel across a long, lingering finish. It is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon from a classic Columbia Valley vintage.

2005 FEATHER - 92 POINTS

"The nose gives up aromas of toasty oak, scorched earth, Asian spices, black currant, and blackberry. Firm and structured on the palate, there are layers of fruit and enough tannin to evolve for another 4-6 years."

2005 FEATHER - 91 POINTS

"The fruit is concentrated and pure: raspberry, cherry and cassis with a chaser of lemony acid."

2005 FEATHER - 91+ POINTS

"Aromas of blackberry, loganberry and bitter chocolate, with a youthfully medicinal licorice pastille quality. Juicy and tight but nicely aromatic; muscular today and not at all fleshy, but quite pure and fruit-driven."

A diverse selection of Tri-Cities area vineyards (42%), including Sagemoor, provide deep color and ripe, flavorful tannins to the wine. Stillwater Creek Vineyard on the Royal Slope of the Frenchman Hills (38%) adds bright, vibrant fruit characteristics. Grapes from The Benches (formerly Wallula), Champoux and Alder Ridge Vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills (30%) add layers of earth, dark fruit and refined tannins.

Randy Dunn is one of the world’s most celebrated makers of extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons.

Dunn established his reputation at Caymus Winery from 1975 to 1985, where his Cabernet Sauvignons became the benchmark for the industry. In addition, his artistry shaped other premium wineries that now enjoy an acclaimed place in the sun (Pahlmeyer, Livingston, La Jota and others). Since 1979, Dunn has produced roughly 5,000 cases a year of his Dunn Vineyards Cabernets.

Randy is known not only for his famous wines, but for his philosophy on how to make wine. He does it his way - leaving the floor of the Napa Valley “to corn and melon farmers,” he tends his vines in the red stony soil of Howell Mountain. There are no road signs; no retail sales. And don’t look for him in a winery tour guide. No time for that, as Randy spends his quiet hours making his wonderful heirloom wines.

Randy lives with his wife, Lori, next to the winery on Howell Mountain.
