2008 Pedestal Merlot

93 Points - Wine Advocate

Considered by many to be one of the most influential winemakers in the world, Pomerol vintner and international consultant, Michel Rolland partners with Washington State wine visionary Allen Shoup to produce this limited release wine.

Vibrant flavors of fresh blackberries, currents and ripe red fruits are framed by notes of toasted oak and bittersweet chocolate. Dark and rich with great concentration, texture and a hint of baking spice that weaves through nuances of fresh huckleberry pie that linger on the finish.

2008 PEDESTAL - 93 POINTS

"The 2008 release is made up of 81% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it was aged for 22 months in 85% new French oak. It reveals a nose of cedar, Asian spices, incense, cassis, and black currant. Structured and savory on the palate with spicy black fruit flavors, it has the balance to evolve gracefully for 2-3 years and will offer prime drinking from 2013 to 2023."

2008 PEDESTAL - 93 POINTS

"Good bright ruby-red. Sexy burnished red currant, minerals and flowers on the nose, complicated by chocolate and graphite. Lush, ripe and broad, with layered flavors of cassis, black cherry and licorice. Large-scaled, dense and airy, and not at all overly sweet. Finishes very long, with broad, dusty tannins and excellent structure. This really echoes on the aftertaste. A very successful and sophisticated Washington Merlot made under the direction of Michel Rolland. Perhaps the best vintage to date for this bottling."

2008 PEDESTAL - 92 POINTS

"Firm in texture, with a moderate grip of tannins surrounding dark berry, black currant and licorice flavors, lingering gently and persistently. One sip demands another."

As with previous vintages, Pedestal is a blend of carefully selected vineyards chosen to create a layered, complex wine. A significant portion of the grapes used for this blend were grown on or near Red Mountain from such well-known sites as Tapteil and Dionysus. Both vineyards contribute to the wine's bold, dark fruit. Weinbau and Connor Lee Vineyards on the Wahluke Slope add to the wine's deep color and rich flavors.

Michel Rolland
is considered by many to be one of the most influential winemakers in the field.  A graduate of the esteemed Bordeaux Faculty of Oenology, he continues to build upon this practical source of knowledge through observations in his own laboratory in Pomerol, France.  He consults for over 100 vintners and vineyards worldwide, producing wines with an alluring style recognized as the “Rolland Method”.

Rolland also maintains partnership interests in far-flung regions of the globe, including his involvement with Long Shadows Vintners.  His home, however, is in Pomerol, where he owns and manages a number of holdings and fine wine estates: Chateau Le Bon Pasteur in Pomerol, Chateau Bertineau Saint-Vincent in Lalande-de-Pomerol, Chateau Rolland-Maillet in Saint-Emilion, and Chateau Fontenil in Fronsac.  In addition, Michel manages the Chateau La Grande Clottee in Lussac-Saint-Emilion under a vineyard lease system.

Vineyard management techniques championed by Rolland include effeuillage (thinning of leaves), and eclaircissage (pruning of clusters), both used to encourage the advent of perfectly ripened grapes. Aging on the lees in new oak barrels and in-barrel malolactic fermentation are also Rolland’s trademarks.

However, those who view the “Rolland Method” as a craftsman’s book of recipes have missed the mark. Rolland is not a technician – he is, first and foremost, an observer.  He studies the surround, that is, the blend of personality traits that distinguishes the vintner, the vineyard, and the grower.  In uncanny fashion, Rolland understands the unique culture of the wine - and therefore the nuances that separate an unexciting wine from something quite extraordinary.  It is this ability to understand the wine that makes him such an amazing oenologist.

Michel is usually winging his way to a vineyard in some far corner of the world. However, he makes a point of returning home each year to celebrate the birthdays of his two daughters, Marie and Stephanie, and grandchildren, Camille, Arthur, Theo and Raphael.
