2012 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley vintner, Randy Dunn, brings his artistry and expertise to Washington State to produce small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley's finest vineyards. His reputation for producing world-class Cabernet spans more than four decades. After making wines at Caymus from 1975-1985, Randy established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain where he continues to craft distinctive wines of high acclaim.

The 2012 vintage produced wines with exceptional color and rich, complex flavors. The growing season started warm; April conditions were near perfect, then temperatures cooled considerably in May and June before warming for the summer. The Columbia Valley’s typical fall season, marked by warm days and cool nights ripened grapes to perfection and produced balanced wines with plenty of natural acidity and rich flavors.

2012 FEATHER - 95 POINTS

"Up there with the 2012 Pedestal release in terms of quality, the 2012 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon is made by Randy Dunn of Dunn Vineyards in Napa Valley. It's always a100% Cabernet, and in 2012 offers sensational notes of sweet black cherry and cassis fruit, tobacco leaf, grahite and lead pencil shavings. Deep concentration, rich and tannic, it needs 4-5 years of cellaring, but will evolve nicely through 2032."

2012 FEATHER - 93+ POINTS

"Pure, varietally accurate aromas and flavors of cassis, bitter chocolate, violet and dried herbs. Wonderfully smooth, pliant and suave but with terrific penetration too; really fills the mouth with perfurme. Spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate, with the huge, building tannins in perfect harmony with the wine's fruit. Splendid tannin management here." - Stephen Tanzer

RAND SEALEY - REVIEW OF WASHINGTON WINES
2012 FEATHER - 19.5/20 POINTS

"This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Benches, Dionysus and Stone Tree vineyards was made under the guidance of the Napa Valley’s Randy Dunn. It exhibits a deep ruby color and an intense nose of blackberry, cherry, plum, cassis, crushed roses, juniper berries, sandalwood, cigar box, violets and incense. On the palate, the dark fruit flavors are deep and penetrating, underlain with licorice, dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans and Missoula flood minerals. The back reveals roasted berries and nuts, kirsch liqueur, crème de cassis, mocha, dried spiced cherries, and touches of leather and lanolin (“legs”) followed by sturdy, yet satiny tannins on the two minute finish. A big, yet elegant and polished Cabernet."

The 2012 Feather is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon from The Benches Vineyard at Wallula in the Horse Heaven Hills, selected for its sophisticated, refined character and Dionysus Vineyard Cabernet, sourced for its dark color and wonderful structure. A small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon from Stone Tree Vineyard (14%) was used to enhance the mouthfeel and add another layer of complexity and richness to the finished wine.

Randy Dunn is one of the world’s most celebrated makers of extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons.

Dunn established his reputation at Caymus Winery from 1975 to 1985, where his Cabernet Sauvignons became the benchmark for the industry. In addition, his artistry shaped other premium wineries that now enjoy an acclaimed place in the sun (Pahlmeyer, Livingston, La Jota and others). Since 1979, Dunn has produced roughly 5,000 cases a year of his Dunn Vineyards Cabernets.

Randy is known not only for his famous wines, but for his philosophy on how to make wine. He does it his way - leaving the floor of the Napa Valley “to corn and melon farmers,” he tends his vines in the red stony soil of Howell Mountain. There are no road signs; no retail sales. And don’t look for him in a winery tour guide. No time for that, as Randy spends his quiet hours making his wonderful heirloom wines.

Randy lives with his wife, Lori, next to the winery on Howell Mountain.
