Napa Valley vintner, Randy Dunn, brings his artistry and expertise to Washington State to produce small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley's finest vineyards. His reputation for producing world-class Cabernet spans more than four decades. After making wines at Caymus from 1975-1985, Randy established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain where he continues to craft distinctive wines of high acclaim.

The 2013 growing season started with an early bud break followed by consistently dry, warm weather that lasted until rainfall moved across the Columbia Valley in mid-June. The precipitation allowed the vines to establish a solid canopy that proved useful when temperatures reached 100 degrees immediately following the rains. With a protective exterior canopy, we were able to open the interior canopy to allow uniform ripening in the fruit zone. As temperatures cooled in September, the extended hang time allowed grape flavors to fully mature.

This deeply layered Cabernet offers bright aromas of dark berry fruits with hints of earth and graphite that gently accent flavors of French prune and sweet spice. A silky wine with rich texture and a viscous mouthfeel that extends from midpalate throughout its lengthy finish.

2013 FEATHER - 92+ POINTS

"The 2013 Feather sports an inky purple color to go with firm, masculine notes of dark chocolate, smoked earth, roasted coffee, graphite and ripe black currants. Beautifully concentrated, with solid mid-palate depth and masses of ripe tannin."

2013 FEATHER - 92+ POINTS

"Classic medicinal Dunn nose of black cherry, graphite, dried herbs and tobacco leaf, lifted by a note of rose petal. Juicy and tightly wound, offering surprising clarity. Not at all a creamy style; in fact, even austere on the back end, which shows serious but ripe building tannins and excellent length."

The 2013 Feather is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from two of Randy’s favorite Sagemoor Farms’ vineyards: Weinbau Vineyard gives the wine its beautiful structure and richness; Dionysus Vineyard Cabernet brings intensity of color and fresh fruit flavors. The Benches Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills accounts for almost a quarter of the blend, selected to add complexity, earthiness and silky tannins.

Randy Dunn is one of the world’s most celebrated makers of extraordinary Cabernet Sauvignons.

Dunn established his reputation at Caymus Winery from 1975 to 1985, where his Cabernet Sauvignons became the benchmark for the industry. In addition, his artistry shaped other premium wineries that now enjoy an acclaimed place in the sun (Pahlmeyer, Livingston, La Jota and others). Since 1979, Dunn has produced roughly 5,000 cases a year of his Dunn Vineyards Cabernets.

Randy is known not only for his famous wines, but for his philosophy on how to make wine. He does it his way - leaving the floor of the Napa Valley “to corn and melon farmers,” he tends his vines in the red stony soil of Howell Mountain. There are no road signs; no retail sales. And don’t look for him in a winery tour guide. No time for that, as Randy spends his quiet hours making his wonderful heirloom wines.

Randy lives with his wife, Lori, next to the winery on Howell Mountain.
