2015 Saggi

2015 Saggi
2015 Saggi

Among Tuscany's oldest and most prestigious wine families, Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari teamed with Allen Shoup to produce a wine that showcases Washington state's terroir with plenty of Italian character. Saggi (meaning "wisdom") is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah.

An early spring and hot weather conditions during the summer growing season defined the 2015 Columbia Valley vintage. Building on the success of our ongoing canopy management program, we worked with growers throughout the season to hand-prune and trim each vine for good airflow inside the canopy while maintaining a uniform fruit zone. By September and into October, conditions returned to a more typical Columbia Valley weather pattern marked by warm days and cool nights to yield small berries with thick skins that produced high quality, fruit-forward wines.

Hand-harvested grapes were brought to the winery in small lots and crushed, then 5-10% of the juice was removed from the tank at the beginning of fermentation, a technique known as saignée used to enhance richenss and concentration. Extended maceration in small, two-ton tanks for an average of 30 days provided for optimal extraction and helped broaden the finished wine's mid-palate. Aged 18 months in all French oak barrels, 55% new.

A striking, brilliant garnet-colored wine with ripe red cherries, fresh fig and Grenadine aromas and flavors wrapped around a core of bright fruit and integrated layers of sweek oak. Lush and generous on the entry, the mid-palate is rich and vibrant before gaining focus on a finish that shines with polished, refined tannins and great balance.

2015 SAGGI - 94 POINTS

"Crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, licorice, and toasty oak all emerge from the 2015 Saggi, which is a blend of 62% Sangiovese, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Syrah. With an inky color, full-bodied richness, fine, polished tannin and a great finish, it's another terrific wine from this estate that's going to evolve beautifully for 10-15 years."

2015 SAGGI - 93 POINTS

"Shows cherries, chocolate and hints of cedar. Medium-bodied, tight and focused with a fine and silky finish. Pretty blend of 62% sangiovese, 28% cabernet sauvignon and 10% syrah. Drink or hold."

Like previous vintages, the 2015 Saggi is a blend of two top Washington State Sangiovese vineyards. Candy Mountain Sangiovese is grown in a warm area of the Columbia Valley adjacent to Red Mountain and yields fruit with dark, ripe cassis aromas and flavors. Conditions are slightly cooler in the Yakima Valley, giving Boushey Vineyard Sangiovese its bright, lively character. The Wahluke Slope's Stone Tree Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon supplies bright, lively character. Bacchus Vineyard Syrah, grown east of the Tri-Cities, adds elegance and heightened color.

The father-son team of Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari, one of Italy’s oldest and most prestigious Tuscan wine families, joined Long Shadows in 2006 to create Saggi, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese blend, bringing their winemaking expertise from A. & G. Folonari Tenute, a collection of small, ultra-premium wines from the family's numerous Tuscan estates.

Since the beginning, Long Shadows director of winemaking and viticulture Gilles Nicault has collaborated with the Folonaris on Saggi's vineyard sourcing, winemaking and blending.  In the fall of 2016, Gilles assumed complete winemaking responsibilities for Saggi after the Folonaris found it increasingly challenging to make the numerous trips overseas that the project requires.

Long Shadows founder Allen Shoup originally met the Folonaris through mutual friend Piero Antinori. It was Allen who introduce Piero to Washington State while at the helm of Chateau Ste. Michelle, and it was Piero's regard for the vineyards of the Columbia Valley that piqued the Folonaris interest in creating a wine true to Washington terroir with plenty of Tuscan character.  Gilles continues that tradition, honoring the quality and style of wines the Folonairs inspired.
